B. A 2.50 g sample of zinc is heated, then placed in a calorimeter containing 65.0 g of water. Temperature of water increases from 20.00 Celsius to 22.50 Celsius. The specific heat of the zinc is 0.390 J/g oC. What was the initial temperature of the zinc metal samples.(we are going to assume that the final temp of the zinc and the water is the same.

We worked on group work for the last part of class. I went through an example like #15 from last nights homework to show what to do when you have a different amount of a chemical and have to use an equation for energy per mole. Please try 14,15,18 tonight if you had trouble on it..do not worry Also do 4 on p 510
Day 5
Chem 122-
I fully labelled a curve for heating water with formulas,( potential energy, states, kinetic energy..will be done tomorrow). I assigned all of #1 from the purple handout. .
The assignment is due tomorrow on enthalpy wrt reactions.
We went over 14,15 and 18. Do p 526 27 to 31
Homework: #1 from handout and p526 #25 and 26
The group work was completed today so that I can mark it(more time will be given).

Assignment:
Find the total energy required to cool ethanol from 102oC to -134oC.
The mass you are cooling is 1.52 g. Show your work and units for all
five calculations for the cooling curve. The bp= 76oC mp= -114oC.
Circle or highlight the values that you obtained from tables.
The specific heat values for ethanol steam is 0.85 J/g oC and
frozen ethanol is 1.05 J/goC. Please include a well-labelled
cooling curve with PE, KE, formulas and states on it. Your final
answer should contain the proper number of significant digits.

Please do #3 and #4 on looseleaf if you were absent. Hint for #4 cycloheptane is C7H14(l) ---sorry I am unable to put subscripts with wkispaces---more hints...the raction for combustion of cycloheptane must be written first, in other words you must figure out what this is first then use it as your net reaction that you want to find energy change for.
Assignments: Handout 17.1 to be done on looseleaf for Tuesday
Chem 122-More work with reaction calculations where a reaction is providing energy for heating water in a hot water tank.. We checked over #5 from the blue sheet.

JB
Calorimeter calculation: Need more practice?
Extra Practise:
A. A chemistry student dissolves 4.51 grams of sodium hydroxide in 100.0 mL of water at 19.5°C (in a calorimeter cup). As the sodium hydroxide dissolves, the temperature of the surrounding water increases to 31.7°C. Determine the heat of solution of the sodium hydroxide in J/mol.
C. A 5.23 g sample of coal(assume pure carbon) is placed in a bomb calorimeter that has a specific heat of 4.53 kJ/oC. If the temperature changes from 21oC to 28oC, find the Hc for the coal.

C. A 5.23 g sample of coal(assume pure carbon) is placed in a bomb calorimeter that has a specific heat of 4.53 kJ/oC. If the temperature changes from 21oC to 28oC, find the Hc for the coal.

September 15-Tuesday................................................... EK
Day 5
Chem 122-
I fully labelled a curve for heating water with formulas,( potential energy, states, kinetic energy..will be done tomorrow). I assigned all of #1 from the purple handout. .
The assignment is due tomorrow on enthalpy wrt reactions.
We went over 14,15 and 18. Do p 526 27 to 31

The group work was completed today so that I can mark it(more time will be given).
September 16-Wednesday
Day 6 Chem 122-Today we practiced six heating and cooling curves, and I assigned a detailed ethanol cooling curve for monday to pass in. You are also required to do 2,3 on the blue handout.
The assignment below is due on monday
Sept 17-Thursday
1. We went over answers to the heating/cooling curves worksheet and pink sheet......... 2,3
2. we checked over the cooling curve from yesterday
3. We also went over solution enthalpy ...notes then checked the answers to the two questions assigned on monday

Sept 24-Thursday Hess Law quiz on monday
Chem 122-More work with reaction calculations where a reaction is providing energy for heating water in a hot water tank.. nd you were assigned some calorimeter questions from the smart board for homework.
C. A 5.23 g sample of coal(assume pure carbon) is placed in a bomb calorimeter that has a specific heat of 4.53 kJ/oC. If the temperature changes from 21oC to 28oC, find the Hc for the coal.
MondaySept 28- Day 12 Hess's Law quiz today
Day 12 Chem 122- We went over 10b or a from thursday. I introduced the last type of calculation today. The example that I went over in class is attached as some of you had grad photos. Please do #13 tonight. The second question on propane is to be done tomorrow night. Homework: Do 17.1 on looseleaf ...this is to be passed in on Tuesday.13.(You will add 13 to your page).
#13 What amount ( mass) of methane undergoing complete combustion is required to heat 100.0 L of water from 5 degrees celsius to 70 degrees celsius?
Here is another question like #13 to try
What mass of propane must be burned to heat
2.50 L of water from 10 degrees Celsius to 800 degrees Celsius?
Sept29 Tuesday-Day 13
